California LCSW Licensure After an Advanced Standing MSW
Your CSWE-accredited advanced standing MSW fully satisfies the degree requirement for LCSW licensure in California. No additional graduate coursework is needed to begin the licensing process. Here is the pathway: graduate with your AS MSW, register as an Associate Social Worker (ASW) with the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS), accumulate 3,000 or more supervised clinical hours over a minimum of 104 weeks, pass both the California Law and Ethics Exam and the ASWB Clinical Exam, then apply for your LCSW license. Of those 3,000 hours, at least 2,000 must be clinical (including a minimum of 750 hours of face-to-face psychotherapy), and at least 1,700 hours must be supervised by a California LCSW.
