Advanced Standing MSW Program Closures: Action Plan

Your Advanced Standing MSW Program Is Closing — Now What?

How to protect your credits, field hours, and licensure when your MSW campus shuts down.

What you’ll learn in this article…

  • Adelphi closes its Poughkeepsie site after spring 2027, displacing about 40 students.
  • Request the teach-out plan in writing within 48 hours of the announcement.
  • Licensure depends on CSWE accreditation at the site where you finished coursework.

Roughly 40 graduate social work students were attending Adelphi University's Hudson Valley site at MidHudson Regional Hospital when its board of trustees approved the closure in September. Classes run through spring 2027; the lease is not renewed.

An advanced standing year is short enough that a decision made at the main campus can land mid-placement. Adelphi's answer, relocate to Manhattan or finish online, is the same pair most closures offer.

Treat the next 30 days as a sequence: written teach-out terms first, then credit and field-hour transfer, licensure verification, refunds. Site stability is now an admissions question, not an afterthought.

What the Adelphi Poughkeepsie Site Closure Teaches Advanced Standing Students

What happens to advanced standing MSW students when their university closes the campus where they were placed?

In September, Adelphi University's board of trustees approved closing its Hudson Valley graduate social work site at MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie. The lease will not be renewed, and the site winds down after the spring 2027 semester, with roughly 40 students enrolled there, according to Newsday's reporting: https://www.newsday.com/long-island/education/adelphi-university-social-work-poughkeepsie-jaxlhfsu

Why a one-year sequence has no slack

Advanced standing compresses the degree into a single year, so field placement, the practice seminar, and licensure-track paperwork are all anchored to one campus. A closure does not cost you a course. It costs you the field instructor who signs your hours, the cohort that carries your seminar, and the placement coordinator who knows the regional agencies by name.

Two options, two different tradeoffs

Adelphi pointed students toward its new 51,000-square-foot Manhattan Center or a fully online program. Relocating preserves in-person supervision but rewrites your commute and the geography of your placement. Going online keeps you enrolled but puts the burden on you to confirm who supervises you and how placements get sourced at a distance.

The economics are the pattern

The decision tracks declining enrollment as students opt for online study, a projected deficit near $7 million, and an estimated $10 million loss tied to a 41% drop in international student enrollment since 2022. None of that is unique to one Poughkeepsie building.

Ask before you accept a seat anywhere

New York licensing runs through NYSED's Office of the Professions and the State Board for Social Work.1 Whether a satellite site holds its own approval, and whether the regional field network outlives the campus, are questions to put in writing now.

The First 30 Days: Your Closure Response Checklist

A closure announcement compresses a year of decisions into a month. Work the sequence in order, and put every request in writing so a paper trail exists after staff members move on.

Day 1: Get the Closure in Writing

Nothing verbal binds anyone. Request the board resolution, provost email, or official notice that suspends or closes the program, and confirm the teach-out end date in that document. If no notice exists, ask for the date it will be issued and who signs it.

Days 2-7: Request the Paperwork

Ask for your full academic audit, the program's teach-out plan, and any written articulation agreement with another CSWE-accredited program. Ask pointedly what happens to students currently mid-field-placement, since supervision hours are the hardest thing to replace.

Days 8-14: Secure Your Records

Collect official transcripts, course syllabi, field evaluations and supervision logs, learning agreements, and a signed verification of supervised hours from your field instructor. Faculty departures happen fast.

Days 15-30: Verify With the Regulators

Contact CSWE to confirm accreditation status and any approved teach-out. Then contact your state social work board and ask, in writing, whether your completed coursework and field hours will count toward licensure.

The One Hard Warning

Do not formally withdraw and do not stop attending until you understand how withdrawal timing affects tuition refunds, federal loan discharge eligibility, and your credit-transfer position. Withdrawal is often irreversible; attendance preserves your standing while you negotiate.

Teach-Out Plans: What They Are and How to Request Yours in Writing

CSWE's Accreditation Policy Handbook (Version 9.10.2026) handles program closure under policy 4.12, "Program Closure & Withdrawal of Accredited Status." A teach-out is the mechanism that protects you inside that process. A teach-out plan is a written arrangement that lets already-enrolled students finish the same program and earn the same credential, usually through the closing school's phased wind-down or a partnership with another CSWE-accredited institution. It is not the same thing as a transfer.

Teach-Out vs. Transfer

A teach-out preserves your catalog year, your cohort, and your sequencing: the field placement calendar, the practice courses in order, the supervision structure you were promised. A transfer re-admits you into someone else's program on their rules, and your credits and field hours get evaluated one by one. If the Poughkeepsie students had only the Manhattan and online options, that is a transfer conversation, not a teach-out.

How to Request Yours

Put the request in writing to the MSW program director and the dean of the school of social work. Ask for three things by name: the teach-out plan, the CSWE teach-out agreement, and confirmation of whether CSWE has required or approved one.1 Send it before the final semester of your cohort begins, and ask directly who signs the agreement and when students see the signed version.

What the Agreement Must Answer

  • Degree conferral: which institution awards the MSW.
  • Tuition protection: what you pay, and whether prior payments carry over.
  • Field continuity: who finds your placement and who supervises it.
  • Faculty: which instructors and field liaisons stay.
  • Timeline: the date your cohort completes.
  • Contingencies: what happens if you fail or withdraw from a course.

If no teach-out exists, ask what CSWE required instead, and keep the answer. Without one, you may be pushed into a general transfer where nothing is guaranteed.

Transferring Advanced Standing Credits and Field Hours Mid-Program

Transfer credits are the smaller loss; field hours are where a closure really costs you time. Spend your effort on the second problem.

Credits: capped, course by course, rarely a semester

CSWE sets no universal cap; each accredited school decides.1 Caps typically run 3 to 16 semester credits, with outliers: the University of Akron allows up to 20 semester hours from other CSWE-accredited graduate programs, Buffalo caps at 3 credits and only for electives outside social work2, and UNC allows 3 while barring transfer for required generalist or specialization courses3. Valdosta State and National University each cap at 6, with 7-year and 5-year age limits respectively, and National accepts only CSWE-accredited MSW coursework4. CSU San Bernardino reaches 16.5

Foundation-year waiver credits rarely map onto another school's advanced standing curriculum: the waiver is a program design, not a portable transcript line.

Field hours: the asset that usually stays put

Field education is the harder transfer. UNC explicitly excludes field-education credit3, and programs commonly run their own placements: Liberty requires 600 hours6, CSU San Bernardino 600 supervised agency hours, Herzing two 250-hour practicum courses, Akron 500 specialization hours within a 900-hour total. Documentation can travel where credit cannot. A signed hours log, learning agreement, and field instructor evaluation may shorten a new placement or satisfy seminar requirements, but only if the receiving program commits in writing.

Ask before you act

Request a written, itemized credit evaluation before you withdraw from anything, and supply syllabi so each course is judged individually. Spot restrictive programs by their stated maximum transfer hours, residency requirements (Herzing requires 8 residency core credits), and language such as "all field hours must be completed in our network." Transferring mid-placement can reset your hours clock, so ask whether in-progress hours count or a fresh placement is required.

Licensure, ASWB Eligibility, and State Board Steps After a Closure

Your license does not hinge on the university's reputation. It hinges on whether the program you attended, at the site where you attended it, held CSWE accreditation during the period your coursework was completed. Graduates who finish while a program is accredited generally keep their licensure pathway. Students who finish after accreditation is withdrawn face case-by-case review, because no nationwide rule protects displaced students.

Verify the program, not the brand

Search CSWE's directory of accredited programs for the specific program and the specific site, not just the university. Then ask CSWE in writing whether accreditation there is current, ending, or already withdrawn, and keep the emailed answer so it can travel into a board file.

Put your questions to the board in writing

ASWB does not decide eligibility. Your state board approves you first, and only then can you register for the exam. Email your board three questions:

  • Will the coursework I completed count toward the master's pathway?
  • Will my supervised field hours count, and to what documentation standard?
  • What exactly do you need from a closing program: transcripts, syllabi, supervisor verification, or catalog year?

Ask for written pre-approval of anything they confirm.

Build the file now

Keep syllabi, the catalog year you enrolled under, field logs signed by supervisors with credentials and license numbers, and every board reply. Texas and Kentucky both tie their master's and clinical pathways to a CSWE-accredited degree, and neither publishes a blanket rule for students displaced mid-program.

Timing is the real risk. Board review and ASWB registration take weeks to months, so open the conversation before the site closes rather than after the final semester ends.

Ask for the teach-out plan in writing within 48 hours. A verbal promise that your credits and field hours will carry over is not a plan, and it will not survive the semester.

Tuition Refunds, Discharge, and Borrower Defense: What You're Actually Owed

When a site closes, three separate money questions get tangled together. Untangle them before you sign anything.

Does the school owe you tuition back?

Refunds come from the institution's published refund and withdrawal policy, plus your state's law, not from Washington. There is no universal federal rule requiring a graduate site closure to return tuition.1 Ask the bursar and the provost's office, in writing, for a prorated refund calculation tied to your remaining credit hours. Preserve every receipt, enrollment agreement, catalog page, and email promise.

Can your federal loans be discharged?

Closed school discharge covers Direct, FFEL, and Perkins loans when an eligible closure happens while you are enrolled, on an approved leave, or within the look-back window after withdrawing: 180 days for loans made on or after July 1, 2020, and 120 days for older loans.2 Rules and exceptions shift, so confirm your own case with your servicer and the Department of Education rather than trusting a figure from a secondhand summary. There is no application deadline, and discharges are often processed automatically about a year after closure.2 Transferring comparable credits or finishing an approved teach-out generally disqualifies you. Federal discharge is loan relief, not a tuition refund.2

Were you misled?

Borrower defense to repayment is the misconduct route, and a closure by itself does not qualify you.3 If the program promised accreditation, field placements, or completion on a timeline that turned out false, you can file, but you will need documentation of the misrepresentation.3

If the school stonewalls

Escalate to your state attorney general, the state consumer protection office, the state agency that licenses the campus, and CSWE as the accreditor.

CSWE Notification Rules, Teach-Out Timelines, and How to Verify Accreditation

Closure is a notifiable event under CSWE's accreditation standards, not a private business decision a program can quietly make. The 2026 Accreditation Policy Handbook requires programs that close a main campus, branch or satellite location, or online option to submit a Program Option Closure Form to the assigned Accreditation Specialist, along with a transfer or graduation plan. The notification must arrive on program letterhead, signed by the primary contact, and emailed rather than scanned. A full withdrawal of accredited status carries a separate form, due at least 90 days before closure if possible, and the accreditation end date is set when transfer and graduation planning concludes. In practice, a written plan should be on file, and you can ask whether yours exists.

Verify, don't assume

Work through three checks in order.

  • The directory: Search CSWE's official Program Directory by institution name, program name, or former name. Statuses read Accredited, Accredited (Conditional), Accredited (Withdrawal in Progress), Candidacy, or Pre-Candidacy. "Withdrawal in Progress" signals a planned closure date.
  • The entity: Accreditation attaches to approved locations and delivery methods, so confirm whether your specific site or online option is an approved offering, not just the main campus.
  • The written answer: Ask CSWE at [email protected] whether a teach-out or transfer plan is on file for your program.1 If no record appears, treat that as a reason to call, not a verdict.

Know the vocabulary trap

"In candidacy," "accredited," and "accredited with withdrawal in progress" carry different consequences for licensure eligibility and credit transfer. Never accept a verbal summary of which one applies to you.

Check state authorization for the physical site separately from CSWE status; a satellite can lose state approval before accreditation is touched. Re-check the directory immediately before you enroll anywhere new, since statuses are often posted before students hear anything directly.

Program closures rarely make headlines. Adelphi's Hudson Valley site, closing after spring 2027, is the exception. To verify any rumored 2025-2026 MSW suspension, check CSWE's program directory and teach-out announcements, the school's site, and trustee minutes, then cross-check BLS.gov, NASW, and your state licensing board.

Questions to Ask Any Program About Site Stability Before You Enroll

Site stability means asking whether the campus, extension center, or cohort you enroll in will still exist long enough for you to finish. Admissions staff can answer plainly if you ask before you pay. For an advanced standing student, one year of tuition rides on a single location and a single field placement network. Ask early, in writing, and keep the replies.

Ask About the Site Itself

  • Accreditation coverage: Is this location covered under the main campus's CSWE accreditation and the state board's approval, or does it operate under a separate arrangement?
  • Viability threshold: What minimum cohort size keeps the site open, and where does this site sit against that number now?
  • Contingency plan: Is there a written plan for students if the site closes or consolidates? Request a copy.
  • Facility arrangement: Does the university own the building, lease it, or share space with a hospital or partner? When does the lease renew?
  • Recent history: Has the university closed, moved, or consolidated any social work site in the last five years?

Ask About Field Education

Find out whether the program places you or expects you to source your own placement. Then ask what happens to your placement and supervision if the campus relocates or shifts fully online, and whether travel to a new site would fall to you.

Ten Minutes of Your Own Checks

Look up the program in CSWE's directory of accredited programs, cross-check your state board's list of approved programs, and skim the university's most recent audited financial statements or board minutes for signs of retrenchment. A program that answers these questions quickly and documents the answers is a program worth a year of your tuition.
